Designers who choose to adopt sustainability as subject matter must make it accessible and memorable for audiences of all ages, a demanding task. Sustainability is broad in its intellectual scope, requiring equal consideration of ecology, economy, and social equity. Because it is a politically divisive field of study, definitions are frequently contested, making it a hard subject for audiences to understand and identify with. As defined by the mainstream media, the characterization is often apocalyptic, prescriptive, and negative.”
